Travelling abroad is exciting, but it's important to protect your health before you go. At Ditchling Pharmacy, our travel health clinic provides expert advice and vaccinations to ensure you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

Why Visit a Travel Health Clinic?

Different destinations pose different health risks. A pre-travel consultation ensures:

  1. You have the right vaccinations for your destination
  2. You understand food and water safety precautions
  3. You have appropriate medication for conditions like malaria or altitude sickness
  4. You're prepared for any health emergencies abroad
  5. Common Travel Vaccinations

Depending on where you're travelling, you may need:

Hepatitis A: Recommended for most destinations outside Western Europe, North America, and Australasia. Spread through contaminated food and water.

Typhoid: Essential for travel to South Asia, Africa, and Central/South America. Also spread through contaminated food and water.

Hepatitis B: Recommended if you might be exposed to blood or body fluids, or for extended stays in high-risk areas.

Yellow Fever: Required for entry to many African and South American countries. We are an authorised Yellow Fever vaccination centre.

Meningitis ACWY: Required for Hajj/Umrah pilgrims and recommended for sub-Saharan Africa.

Rabies: Consider if you'll be far from medical facilities, working with animals, or travelling to high-risk areas.

Japanese Encephalitis: For extended travel to rural areas of Southeast Asia and the Far East.

    Malaria Prevention

Malaria cannot be prevented by vaccination alone. If you're travelling to a malaria-endemic area, you'll need:

  6. Antimalarial tablets (started before travel and continued after return)
  7. Mosquito bite prevention strategies
  8. Awareness of symptoms to watch for after returning home
  9. We can prescribe and supply antimalarial medication during your consultation.

    When to Book Your Appointment

Ideally, book your travel health consultation **6-8 weeks before departure**. This allows time for:

  10. Vaccinations to take effect
  11. Multiple dose vaccines to be completed
  12. Any side effects to resolve before travel
  13. Last-minute travellers can still be helped: some protection is better than none.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  14. Your travel itinerary (dates, destinations, activities)
  15. Any previous vaccination records
  16. Details of any medications you take
  17. Information about your medical history
  18. Book Your Travel Consultation
